SCENIC HIKE TO KRATERSJÖN LAKE
WITH ABISKO GUESTHOUSE
It might be a bit cold to swim in but Kratersjön – the crater lake – is flanked by flat, smooth rocks perfect for sitting and taking in the views.
We set off from the Guesthouse at 10am in our minibuses and head to the neighbouring area of Björkliden, where we park and start our hike. We head up across the Rakkasorda hills in the fresh air. There are birch trees scattered around us as we hike and we may see reindeer up here.
From the higher points there is a super view of Lapporten – the gap in the mountains that is know as the ‘gate to Lapland’ and down over the beautiful Lake Torneträsk.
The plateau that is home to the lake is around 3km from Björkliden. If you aren’t brave enough to go into the glistening lake water, a small stream heading down can be good for sticking toes into. We sit here for a while to enjoy the peace and the views before heading back to Guesthouse.
This hiking tour is available most days in the summer. Lunch is not included so bring food with you. The hike takes 3-4 hours and starts at 10:00. Clothing should be suitable for being out in the weather and some walking. Total walking distance is around 5-6km.
