We set off from the Guesthouse at 10am in our own minibuses north west to Tornehamn, a small settlement 17km from Abisko towards the Norwegian border. It sits on the shore of Lake Torenträsk and is home to the Railway Navvy Graveyard, the final resting place of workers that built the Malmbana railway line in the late 1800s.
A small, well-kept and beautiful chapel is also here, though it is much more modern. It was built in 1987 by local craftsmen. The christenings and weddings record book and tin candlesticks were gifts from the railways company SJ. The key to the chapel hangs on the door, so you can look around inside.
We walk through the beautiful birch trees, scattered with Blue Sowthistle and Globeflower, which then open out into an area full of plant life. Here we’ll find the local variety of rhododendron, Lapland Rosebay, orchids and rock speedwell. There is plenty of time to stop, smell the flowers and take photographs, as well as appreciate the view.
This hiking tour is available most days in the summer. Lunch is not included so bring food with you. The hike takes 3-4 hours and starts at 10:00. Clothing should be suitable for being out in the weather and some walking. Total walking distance is around 4km so this is a very easy walk and suitable for everyone.
Minimum 4 people
